The Haddow family
“Throughout the process, we had the invaluable support of the Mission Housing staff... We are now blessed with a wonderful place we can call home.”
Gareth Haddow is a community outreach worker and soccer school coordinator with Ambassadors Football in Stepney, in the borough of Tower Hamlets. Ambassadors Football, an international initiative, exists to communicate the gospel through football and see individuals and communities transformed. This happens through playing football, building relationships, and supporting and mentoring people.
Gareth's work is based around partnering with local churches and using football projects to reach out to the community. Through various initiatives Gareth has been able to develop and grow relationships with a number of Muslim families, and a fathers' football project has enabled him to reach between 70 and 100 fathers in Tower Hamlets.
Mission Housing has helped Gareth, his wife Michelle and their children find a place to call home in the community they serve. 'After moving to Tower Hamlets in 2006, we felt we wanted to make this place our home for the long-term future,' says Gareth. 'Having settled in well with a new church (St Paul's Shadwell), our children in a local school, and the main part of my ministry taking shape, we wanted to be a part of this community.'
The process of finding a suitable place to live took two years. 'There were real disappointments and times of wondering what and how the provision would come through,' says Gareth. 'Throughout the process, we had the invaluable support of the Mission Housing team and were able to ring them at any time if we were in doubt or had questions.
'We are now blessed with a wonderful place we can call home, with a large communal garden for the children to play in, three bedrooms upstairs, a spacious living room downstairs and a large kitchen, we feel it has really helped us settle in and commit to loving our neighbours.'
