RUTH & PETE BRODIE – recent shared owners

RUTH & PETE BRODIE

We live in Islington and attend a church called St Giles Christian Mission. We have both been actively involved in the church since 2012.

We’ve loved getting stuck into church and community life and have been part of:

  • running Christianity Explored courses,
  • building relationships with local parents at school,
  • teaching Sunday school and crèche,
  • having neighbours round for food,
  • running holiday Bible clubs and caring for the elderly in the community.
  • Pete is an elder and is involved with preaching and leading services.
  • He’s also a trustee for the church. I am on the committee for practical duties and maintenance.

Thanks to Mission Housing and the generous gifts and investments made, we have been able to continue serving our church and community in these ways.

Without them, we like so many others, would have been priced out of our local community in London.

We were previously living in a small 3 bed apartment on the 3rd floor with no lift and it was becoming increasingly unmanageable to stay in the flat. Ruth has chronic back pain and this was becoming more of a struggle too. We looked at moving into a bigger place on the ground floor but everything was way out of our price range.

We both felt, and continue to feel, passionate about our church and surrounding area and that God has uniquely placed us at St Giles church to help reach our local community long-term therefore we contacted Mission Housing to see if they could help us on a shared ownership basis.

They took us on and we we’ve been blown away by God’s provision - even just in the first couple days Jim told us that an anonymous benefactor had pledged to invest 50k. We both wept that evening! Over about 6 months, enough money was raised and we were able to purchase a 3 bed semi-detached house 2 mins walk from our church!

Our new house has already been such a huge blessing in so many ways. Due to its location and ease of access we’ve been able to have much more of an open door policy in a way that we were unable to before.

We have been excited to see God at work in the lives of many different people we have been spending time with. This includes a guy called Jason who has been helping us do some renovations. It’s been so encouraging to see his heart gradually softening towards God.

We are so thankful to God for his generosity and kindness to us! Through Mission Housing and through those who have invested and given us gifts, God has provided us with a wonderful home and has allowed us to stay in London and therefore continue to participate in the work he’s doing at St Giles and the surrounding area.
