From Sydney to Sydenham
“Even with our substantial deposit, buying a house in London seemed nigh on impossible; more investment was needed, and Mission Housing offered the solution.”
Tim & Emma Iles
We live in Sydenham, SE London, with our two daughters Imogen and Molly. We made the big move from Sydney Australia for Tim to lead a new church plant called Grace Church Sydenham. The church has been going now for 3 years and we have been reaching out to the local community.
Up until October 2017, we had been living in a house rented by the church, but having sold our house in Southampton we had money to invest and felt the wisest thing to do would be to buy a property in Sydenham. This house would need to be suitable for the long term work ahead, and one that could be shaped to suit the ministry – such as church meetings, prayer gatherings, church socials and neighbourly hospitality.
Even with our substantial deposit, buying a house in London seemed nigh on impossible; more investment was needed, and Mission Housing offered the solution: we contacted many of our friends and relatives asking if they would join in investing in our house and so in our ministry. A number of generous people responded and wonderfully the required value was raised through investment and mortgage, all under Mission Housing’s housing association banner.
We found a suitable house near to Sydenham High Street, one right at the heart of things but in a quiet, friendly street and moved there in October 2017 and have already started to make friends with the neighbours and build relationships in order to share the Gospel.
Beside some hiccups with planning permission, renovation works begin imminently.
